I am new to X-plane, coming over from MSFS with mega scenery, but wanted to not have 2 computers, being that one windows box was only for MSFS, and Love my iMac, so wanted to only have apple. Anyway... I loaded up X-Plane 9, then downloaded beta 6 and added the USA scenery.
BTW, system specs new iMac G5, 2.4, 2g ram, 256 vram.
I see all these great screen shots, and maybe I'm missing something, I went to KSAN and KLAX, NO airport buildings ? Yet I see them posted all over this web site. I see all types of heavy AI aircraft, again, I'm not seeing anything. I also thought that it would have a 737, but didn't see that yet ? I am not sure if there has been any talk about improving / change to the default ATC, being improved... do I still need a bunch of add on software like with msfs ? or am I just missing something...?
Thanks for the help....
Jay

X-Plane right "out of the box" is somewhat less than complete. (that's the nicest way I know how to put it
).
Virtually every airport building you see is custom scenery. The only airport scenery that X-Plane comes with default is LOWI (Innsbruck, Austria) in V9 and KSBD (San Bernardino, CA) in V8.
Most of the small handfull of default aircraft are sadly lacking. They got quite a bit better in V9 over v8, but many of them are still holdovers from v7.
Almost every really good aircraft & scenery is an "add-on". Thankfully, the vast majority are freeware and even most of the payware stuff is very reasonably priced. You've come to the right place if you're looking for Heavies. Look under the forum heading Registry > XPFW v8 > Airliners. You'll find a wealth of excellent aircraft including a few different versions of the 737. (one of my personal favourites too) There are also 2 really superb aircraft here that are currently in beta form under development. 757-200 and an MD-82. both are almost entirely object-based and will resemble the quality of some of the finer MSFS heavies that you may be used to. In order to access these aircraft, you'll have to sign up to be a beta-tester. (I'm sorry - I'm not sure where the link is)
As far as a resource for other aircraft, scenery, and plugins go... www.x-plane.org is a good place to start. (check under Files > Download Manager) You'll find a wealth of plugins, aircraft and scenery ranging from mediocre to simply outstanding.
Two sceneries that I would HIGHLY recommend are Final Frontier and Inside Passage. (scenery for the Alaska Panhandle and coastal British Columbia respectively) They're both payware - roughly $20 a pop - but worth at least twice that IMHO
Two more freeware sceneries DEFINATELY not to be missed are Paris by Bertrand Augras and EDDM Munich Franz-Josef Strauss by Adel Habib, Jochen Haink, Jürgen Schäble.
For better or worse, you've joined X-Plane at a transitionary phase as we move from version 8.64 to v9.0. For the next few months you'll likely have to put up with a buggy piece of software that can seem at times to be unfinished as it gets slowly refined into a stable release. Be ready to be patient
Welcome to the zoo

Agreed, six7's post most certainly should be pinned (that's for those who read pinned threads
)
